Finding parking in historic downtown St. Augustine doesn’t have to be frustrating.
As a local, the biggest mistake I see visitors make is spending 20 minutes driving around the Plaza hoping the “perfect” parking space opens up. That’s time you could already be exploring St. George Street, visiting the Castillo, or enjoying lunch overlooking the Matanzas River.

Look for a metered space around the Plaza, Bayfront, or one of the city parking lots. If you find one close to where you want to explore, you’ve scored a great spot.

You’ll pay one time, forget about your car, and enjoy the city instead of watching the clock or moving your vehicle every couple of hours.

Here’s exactly what I’d tell a friend visiting St. Augustine.
If you know you’ll be downtown for four hours or longer, don’t waste your vacation circling the Plaza looking for the perfect parking space.
Head straight to the Historic Downtown Parking Garage.
Historic St. Augustine was built long before cars existed. Once you’ve parked, almost everything visitors come to see is an enjoyable walk away.
🚋 Local Alternative: Skip Downtown Parking Altogether
Sometimes the best parking spot isn’t downtown at all.
If you’re planning to spend the day sightseeing, one of my favorite alternatives is to let someone else do the driving.
Purchase an Old Town Trolley Tours hop-on, hop-off ticket, then park for free at the Old Town Trolley Welcome Center on San Marco Avenue. From there, simply hop aboard and ride into the historic district while enjoying a fully narrated tour of St. Augustine.
Throughout the day, you can hop off at the attractions, restaurants, museums, and shops that interest you, then catch the next trolley whenever you’re ready to continue exploring.
When your day is over, just board the trolley one last time and ride back to your vehicle—no feeding parking meters, no moving your car, and no wondering where you parked.

If you can find a space here, grab it.
It’s one of my favorite places to begin because you’re only steps from St. George Street, the Plaza de la Constitución, restaurants, museums, and many of downtown’s best shops.
🏰 Near the Castillo
Best for: History lovers and lunch
Parking near the Castillo makes for a great start to the day.
One of my favorite routes is lunch at River & Fort, followed by a walk down Cuna Street toward St. George Street. Before long, I’m stopping at The Hyppo Gourmet Popsicles for a refreshing treat before wandering through the historic district.
🍕 Behind Pizza Alley
Best for: Easy access to downtown
This area is often overlooked by first-time visitors and provides an excellent starting point for exploring restaurants, boutiques, and historic streets.

- Arrive before 8:00 a.m. Monday through Friday and you won’t have to feed the meter while enjoying a peaceful morning walk.
- Sunday is one of my favorite days to visit downtown because city metered parking is free all day.
- During Nights of Lights, holiday weekends, and major festivals, parking fills quickly. Arriving early can save both time and frustration.
